Data Center is a specialized facility designed to house computing and networking equipment while providing power, cooling, connectivity, physical security, and other supporting systems.

In mining, a data center can be used as the infrastructure location for a large number of mining hardware devices. However, not every data center is suitable for mining because mining hardware can create high continuous electrical and thermal loads.

Data Centers and Mining

Mining loads differ from many conventional computing workloads. ASIC miners can operate continuously at high power levels and convert most of their electrical consumption into heat. As a result, mining-oriented data centers require sufficient power capacity and heat-removal capability.

Equipment density is another important factor. Increasing the amount of computing hardware per unit of floor space increases both electrical and thermal requirements.

Infrastructure Reliability

Continuous mining depends on the availability of power, cooling, and network systems. A power failure, overheating event, or network outage can stop equipment from producing hashrate and increase downtime.

For this reason, data-center evaluations can include electrical redundancy, cooling capacity, monitoring systems, network connectivity, maintenance procedures, and recovery capabilities.

Mining Hosting

A data center may be owned by the mining operator or provide infrastructure to third-party equipment owners. In the latter case, equipment may be deployed under a mining hosting model, with the facility operator providing part of the required infrastructure.
