Chip temperature is the temperature of a computing chip while equipment is operating. In mining, this metric is used to monitor the thermal condition of ASICs, GPUs, and other computing components.

Chip temperature is determined by electrical power, operating frequency, voltage, workload, and the effectiveness of heat removal. Therefore, changing the power limit, frequency, or cooling parameters can directly affect temperature.

Why Temperature Matters

Excessive heating can lead to reduced performance, an increase in hardware errors, and activation of thermal throttling. However, low temperature by itself is not a separate measure of efficiency: stable operation within the permissible range is more important.

Temperature Monitoring

Chip temperature is monitored using equipment sensors and miner management software. When specified thresholds are exceeded, the system may automatically adjust frequencies, fan speeds, or other parameters.

Various cooling technologies are used to maintain chip temperature, including air, liquid, and immersion cooling. Their effectiveness also depends on heat dissipation and thermal load.
