A hot wallet is a crypto wallet that operates in an environment with internet access, allowing users to quickly receive, send, and sign operations involving crypto assets. Many mobile, desktop, and browser wallets are hot wallets.

The main advantage of a hot wallet is convenience. Users can quickly generate a wallet address, receive assets, sign a transaction, or connect to a dApp. This makes hot wallets useful for regular transactions, trading, DeFi, and other activities that require frequent blockchain interaction.

Hot wallet risks

Continuous internet connectivity increases the attack surface. Malware, phishing websites, malicious browser extensions, fake applications, and other threats can target the device or wallet environment. If an attacker obtains key material or tricks the user into approving a malicious operation, assets can be lost.

For this reason, hot wallets are often used for funds intended for active operations, while larger long-term holdings may be kept in a cold wallet. This separation does not eliminate risk, but it can reduce the amount of capital directly exposed to a continuously connected environment.
