A cold wallet is a method of storing cryptographic keys in which the key material is generally kept outside a continuously internet-connected environment. The main purpose of cold storage is to reduce the likelihood of remote access to private keys.

Cold storage can be implemented through a hardware wallet, an isolated computer, an offline device, or other procedures designed to separate keys from ordinary online environments. A cold wallet therefore describes a storage and access model rather than one specific device type.

Cold versus hot storage

A hot wallet emphasizes convenience and frequent network interaction, while cold storage emphasizes isolation of key material. Cold storage generally requires additional steps when signing transactions and is therefore less convenient for frequent activity.

Cold storage does not automatically protect against every threat. Users must still protect their seed phrase, backups, and devices. They must also verify transaction details before signing, because physical key isolation does not prevent social engineering or accidental approval of malicious operations.
