Dielectric fluid is a liquid with low electrical conductivity that can be used as a coolant around electrical components. In mining, dielectric fluids are especially important for immersion cooling, where mining equipment can be placed directly into the fluid.

Ordinary water is not intended for direct contact with powered electronics because its electrical properties and dissolved impurities can create conductive paths. Dielectric fluids provide electrical insulation while also transporting heat away from components.

Role in Immersion Cooling

When ASIC equipment is immersed, the fluid contacts many heated surfaces directly. It absorbs heat from the components and transports that energy to a heat exchanger or another part of the cooling loop.

Fluid selection must consider more than thermal performance. Long-term compatibility with plastics, cables, seals, adhesives, and metals is also important. Changes in fluid properties over time can reduce system performance.

Dielectric Fluid vs Coolant

Dielectric fluid is a specific type of coolant. Not every coolant is dielectric. For example, some water-based coolants transfer heat efficiently but are not designed for direct immersion of electrical equipment.

A complete system therefore has to consider the electrical, thermal, and chemical properties of the working fluid simultaneously.
