Power consumption is the amount of electrical power that equipment uses during operation. In mining, this parameter is usually expressed in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW) and is one of the key factors in calculating operating expenses.

Power consumption depends on the device design, algorithm, workload, clock frequency, voltage settings, and power limit. In ASIC miners, a significant portion of consumption comes from the computing boards and cooling system.

Power Consumption and Electricity Costs

When operating continuously, power can be converted into energy consumption over a specific period. For example, equipment rated at 1 kW operating for 24 hours consumes 24 kWh per day if its actual power remains constant.

The cost of this electricity is determined by the electricity tariff. Therefore, the same miner can have different economic performance depending on the cost of electricity.

Power Consumption and Efficiency

Consumption cannot be evaluated separately from performance. Power efficiency are used to compare equipment.

Reducing consumption while maintaining sufficient hashrate can improve the economic efficiency of equipment. Methods such as undervolting, underclocking, and power limiting can be used for this purpose.

Other Factors to Consider

  • peak and actual power consumption;
  • consumption of the computing equipment and auxiliary systems;
  • load on the electrical infrastructure;
  • heat generation;
  • the impact of temperature and cooling conditions on operational stability.

Almost all electrical energy consumed by a miner is ultimately converted into heat, so power calculations are also part of calculating the thermal load of the cooling system.
