Clock frequency is the number of clock cycles performed by a computing component per second. It is usually expressed in MHz or GHz and is one of the parameters that determine equipment performance.
In mining, changing frequency can affect hashrate, power consumption, and chip temperature. However, the relationship is not universally linear and depends on the equipment architecture and algorithm.
Frequency and Overclocking
Increasing the frequency above standard values is called overclocking. It can increase performance but may also increase power consumption, temperature, and the likelihood of hardware errors.
Reducing the frequency is called underclocking. It is used to reduce power consumption and heat generation or to find a more suitable operating mode.
Relationship to Voltage
Frequency is closely related to supply voltage. In some systems, reducing voltage together with frequency can reduce power consumption. This approach is known as undervolting.
If the temperature becomes too high, the system may automatically reduce frequency through thermal throttling, resulting in lower actual hashrate.
