A cryptoasset is a broad term for a digital asset that is created, stored, transferred, or accounted for using cryptographic technology and, in many cases, blockchain or other distributed systems.
Cryptoassets can include coins, tokens, stablecoins, and other digital assets. The exact classification depends on the asset’s technical and economic characteristics.
Cryptoasset vs. cryptocurrency
The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but cryptoasset is broader. Cryptocurrency is generally associated with an asset used to transfer value or serve as a unit of account, while a cryptoasset can have additional purposes.
For example, a governance token may primarily be used for protocol governance, while a utility token may provide access to specific functions.
Why classification matters
Different cryptoassets have different issuance mechanisms, holder rights, risks, custody requirements, and use cases. The fact that an asset exists on a blockchain alone does not fully describe its economic nature.
