Tax base is the amount, value, or other measure to which a tax rate is applied to calculate a tax liability.
In mining, the tax base can be defined in different ways depending on local legislation. It may be based on the value of cryptocurrency received through mining, revenue, taxable profit, business income, or another legally specified measure.
Why the tax base matters
The same nominal tax rate can produce very different tax liabilities when applied to different tax bases. Therefore, knowing the percentage rate alone is not enough to determine the actual tax burden.
The tax base can be affected by deductible expenses, allowances, exemptions, valuation rules, recognition dates, and the treatment of mined cryptocurrency.
In a mining economic model, the tax base should be distinguished from ordinary mining expenses because tax rules do not necessarily follow the same classification.
